About the Program Technology

Community Canopy and Energy-Saving Trees utilize a research-based, easy-to-use online mapping tool that takes the guesswork out of tree planting. This tool focuses on homeowner education and maximizing environmental impact. By entering a planting address, the tool calculates where to specifically and strategically plant trees for the greatest energy- and money-saving benefits.

Planting the right tree in the right place is key to maximizing the energy-savings benefit that trees provide. When planted properly, a single tree can save a homeowner up to 20% on energy costs.

But trees do much more than provide energy savings to the homeowner. They also provide tangible benefits for the entire community: improved air quality, reduced stormwater runoff, beautification of your neighborhood, reduced urban heat island effect, and a smaller carbon footprint, just to name a few.

The interactive program technology is powered by i-Tree, and provides valuable education and guidance surrounding appropriate tree placement. In addition, the technology offers partners a streamlined execution for urban tree distributions, and the robust partner dashboard delivers an abundance of data/metrics surrounding the environmental impact of all trees distributed.

i-Tree

i-Tree is a consortium between U.S. Forest Service, the Davey Tree Expert Company, Society of Municipal Arborists and the Arbor Day Foundation, conducting research and creating research-based tools to help community and urban forestry. This peer-reviewed software suite from the USDA Forest Service provides urban forestry analysis and benefits assessment tools. The i-Tree Tools help communities of all sizes to strengthen their urban forest management and advocacy efforts by quantifying the structure of community trees and the environmental services that trees provide.

Frequently asked questions

What should I consider before planting a tree?

Planting the right tree in the right place is key. First, look at your property and identify other trees, power lines, sidewalks, and the overall size of your yard. Then envision a full-grown, healthy tree in that space, making sure these existing items aren't affected. For example, if you have an overhead power line 20 feet above the ground, you won't want to plant a tree that can grow more than 20 feet tall near or under these lines.

When will my trees arrive?

The Arbor Day Foundation and your community partner want your selected trees to arrive healthy and thriving. We use your hardiness zone to determine when trees are shipped to you. The Arbor Day Foundation's tree shipping schedule will help you determine when your trees should arrive. Our team will email you helpful information to begin prepping for planting, a few weeks before your tree arrives.

For homeowners whose partner has opted for local pickup event(s): Your trees will not be shipped directly to your home. You will need to visit your selected pickup location to pick up your tree(s).

How big are the trees I'm getting?

Good question—this depends on the species and shipment method that the partner has chosen.

Typically, a direct mailed tree will be between 1' - 3' tall. Detailed information about how to plant the trees will be sent to you in an email and will also be included within your tree package.

If you are picking up your tree at an event, your tree will generally be between 2' - 5' tall. You will receive a video with planting tips and instructions via email before your event date. You will also receive email and text message reminders of your pickup date/time/location.

Can I change the species of tree I reserved?

If you've reserved a tree but would like to change the species you ordered, please call or email customer support. They will check to see where your tree is at in the fulfillment process to determine if a change can be made and if there is availability remaining in the desired species. In the event that your order has already been pulled for shipping, we are unable to change the species you originally reserved. If your order has not been pulled for shipping, our team will work to accommodate your request, taking into consideration the species availability within the program.

With direct shipped trees, what comes in the tree shipping package?

Each package of trees includes your tree(s), along with a variety of helpful information including tree planting instructions, tree pruning methods, and proven tree care methods to help your tree grow and thrive into a mature tree. These materials also include helpful links to the Arbor Day website where more planting and tree care information can be found.

What if I cannot make it to the pickup event to pick up my tree?

Please call customer support if you are unable to pick your tree up at the event. Most partners will offer an alternative date or time to pick up your tree and we will be happy to provide that information to you or share your information with the partner so they may contact you to arrange a pickup. There are occurrences where the originally scheduled event is the only available time to pick up your tree and no alternative dates or times will be offered by the partner. Should this be decided upon by the partner, any tree left over and not picked up will be donated to the community at the partner's discretion.

How are the energy savings calculated?

The Community Canopy and Energy-Saving Trees technology is powered by i-Tree, based upon years of scientific research. Specifically, the formulas and data are calculated from the i-Tree Design application, developed by multiple credible forestry partners. Tree effects on energy use are calculated using the methods detailed in the USDA Forest Service's publication, "Carbon Dioxide Reduction Through Urban Forestry: Guidelines for Professional and Volunteer Tree Planters (PSW-GTR-171)."

Energy effects on buildings from shade, evapotranspiration and wind speed reduction (windbreak) are calculated using an applied reduction factor based on tree type, height, azimuth and distance from the home.

Shade and evapotranspiration effects are set to zero when trees are beyond 18 meters [approx. 60 feet] from defined building footprints.

Windbreak effects on energy use are set to zero when trees are at a distance from the building equaling 35 times the tree height or greater (see: Heisler, G.M. and D.R. Dewalle. 1988. Effects of Windbreak Structure on Wind Flow. Agriculture, Ecosystems and Environment. 22/23:41-69).

The community benefits - carbon, air quality and stormwater - calculations are based on methods and models derived from the i-Tree Streets application. As such, this tool relies on average species growth and geographic parameters for 16 national climate zones and, consequently, should be considered a starting point for understanding trees' value in the community rather than a scientific accounting of precise values. For more detailed information on urban and community forest assessments, or the methodology behind these tools, please explore the i-Tree website.

I live in a new neighborhood / housing development, and the mapping function isn't able to find my address on the map. What should I do?

If the map pulls up the space where your house is now built, map the general shape of your home in the correct spacing. If the map does not pull up the correct location or returns an error message, please call the customer support line, found at the bottom of this page, for help.

Welcome to Community Canopy/Energy-Saving Trees!

As part of our mission to inspire people to plant, nurture, and celebrate trees, we hope to make trees a valuable part of the nation's infrastructure. We've collaborated with Davey Tree Company and the U.S. Forest Service to help corporations, energy and utility companies, nonprofits, service organizations and others offer their audience free trees to be planted strategically to conserve energy.

Trees planted strategically around homes—for summer shade or winter windbreaks—can save homeowners up to 20% on energy bills. These savings in addition to community benefits these trees can produce: carbon sequestration, improved air quality, and stormwater runoff retention. By participating in the Community Canopy and Energy-Saving Trees programs, your company can offer these valuable benefits to your customers, employees, and community, while engaging them in a natural solution for environmental sustainability. The program was originally adopted by utility companies but will also work well for many other industries & organizations including:
  • Corporations who are looking to offer free or discounted trees to their employees, customers, or members
  • Energy/utility companies who are looking to offer trees to their customers
  • Nonprofit tree groups who are looking to offer free or discounted trees to their community members
  • Municipalities who are looking to offer free or discounted trees to their community

Frequently asked questions

How are the energy benefits calculated?

i-Tree powers the Community Canopy and Energy-Saving Trees technology. Simply stated, i-Tree research has provided an algorithm that takes into consideration the following factors: tree species, tree size in year 20, climate zone, the tree's distance from the home, the size of the home, and the insulation values for the home. Once all these factors are taken into consideration, the formula produces an estimated energy savings, in dollars. All figures shown are the benefits of a tree at its point of maturity, approximately 20 years.

For a more in-depth description, see itreetools.org.

How do homeowners receive the trees?

Each participant reserves his or her tree(s) through a project portal created for each individual partner. As for the delivery method, our partners have two options for distributing the trees to their audience. The first is the direct ship method, in which the Arbor Day Foundation ships each tree order individually to the address that the participant provides upon checkout. This method is ideal for large eligible geographies and when convenience is critical. One gallon trees are typically shipped with this model.

The second distribution method is hosting a local pickup event—either our partner or a partnering organization hosts an event(s) at a convenient central location where each participant will claim their tree(s) in person after pre-reserving in your project portal. The Arbor Day Foundation will ship the trees in bulk to the pre-determined event location(s) and provide the organizers of the event with a summary report of all tree orders. This method is useful for audience engagement within smaller territories, for times when additional educational outreach is desired, and/or when partners are interested in offering larger trees. Three or five gallon trees are generally sourced for this model.

How do I know which trees species to choose?

As our team works with partners in the planning stage, we discuss preferred species and provide grower availability in the region. This availability list will include appropriate species for the climate and hardiness zone. From there, our partner's preference and availability of stock will determine what species are offered through the program. In order to best serve the participating audience, we like to offer a combination of small, medium, and large landscape trees for all types and sizes of residential yards.

Step four of this onboarding form provides partners the opportunity to list preferred tree species for their project. This is intended to give us an idea of what each partner would like to offer, but will not be final upon your form submission. The Arbor Day Foundation will be in contact to make final species selections .

How do customers know where to plant the trees for maximum energy savings?

An integral part of the Community Canopy and Energy-Saving Trees partnership is the interactive project portal created and customized for each partner. Through this portal, each participant provides their address to view an aerial map of their house/yard, then uses an icon to guide them to the areas around the property that yield the greatest energy savings. The tool incorporates our "Right Tree, Right Place" planting guide and provides visual cues to the participants as to where best to plant the tree. The participant chooses the tree species they would like to plant and proceeds to the checkout phase of the tool.

How much will this program cost?

Excellent question! That depends on several factors: the tree availability, chosen tree species and delivery method. For the direct ship method, the partnership costs can range from $45-$50 per tree. Because it is not cost efficient to ship large trees, the direct ship method usually dictates that the trees be around 1 to 3 feet in height. For the local pickup method, the partnership costs can range anywhere from $50-$100 per tree (depending on the size of trees being distributed).

We ask for an approximate budget in step two of the onboarding form simply to better understand our partners' parameters for the program. Again, nothing is irreversible. We contact partners after receiving the form to collaborate on final project decisions.

Why do I have to upload zip codes?

Different trees species flourish in different climate and hardiness zones. That is to say, a tree native to northern Maine may not grow well (or even survive) in western Texas. Zip codes are the strongest indicator of climate and hardiness zones, so we can then determine appropriate species for the eligible region.

What if I have other requirements of my audience, beyond geography?

There are additional areas and functionality within the project portal that will allow for other verifications to be considered. This may include account numbers, employee numbers, or promo codes. There is also a "review orders" functionality that can be activated so all orders can be reviewed before approving or denying. Additional verification, beyond geography, is optional but, where appropriate, can provide partners with more confidence that trees are being reserved by the desired audience.

Does The Arbor Day Foundation provide customer support?

Absolutely. This is a great perk of our program and partnership. We train our call center team to know the specifics of each partnership (number of trees available, launch date, tree species offered, etc.) so they can assist any participants with questions/needs in the online tree reservation process.

Will The Arbor Day Foundation help with marketing the program?

Certainly. We offer a robust online marketing toolkit to partners for reference as they plan their program promotion. This toolkit includes templates for email blasts to customers, social media posts, press releases, digital and printed ads, fliers, and more. During the planning phase of the project, our team works with each partner to customize their outreach approach for optimal results. Partners can share ideas about their marketing strategy in step two of the onboarding form.
